"Tide Pod Challenge Warning"

By Markey, Paula

February 08, 2018

Dear West Central Parents and Guardians,

A new viral video challenge has gained national attention recently as teens record themselves ingesting laundry and dish washer pods in what has been dubbed the “Tide Pod Challenge.”  Today, a Tide Pod was confiscated at our middle school.  Because safety is one of our top priorities and due to the potentially lethal consequences of the challenge, West Central Community Unit School District #235 believes parents and guardians of students need to understand the serious nature of the trend.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has warned in a press release that those who are exposed to the highly concentrated, toxic detergents are at risk of severe injury.  According to CPSC, “those who have ingested detergent from the packets have required medical attention and hospitalization for loss of consciousness, excessive vomiting, drowsiness, throat swelling, and difficulty breathing.  Eye contact has also resulted in reports of injury, including severe irritation and temporary loss of vision.

Please also be reminded of your young children who may mistake the pods for candy or toys due to their bright colors and soft feel.  Parents and guardians are encouraged to keep detergent pods sealed in their original packaging and to ensure they are out of child’s sight and reach.

If swallowed or exposed to the eye:

  • Immediately call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222
  • If swallowed, rinse as much of the detergent as possible from the mouth
  • If exposed to the eye, flush the eye with water for at least 15 minutes

Please take some time to talk to your student about the seriousness and dangers of partaking in this dangerous trend. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to notify the building principal where your child attends or myself at the numbers above.

Sincerely,
Paula Markey
Superintendent

West Central District 235
