April 18, 2018, was Youth to Springfield Day in the state capital. For 59 years, Illinois’ rural electric and telephone cooperatives have sponsored high school sophomores and juniors on an annual trip to Springfield in order to watch the state government’s political process in action and meet with some of our state politicians. During the day, students met with elected officials and learned more about the workings of government. They were also able to tour the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum as well as the Old State Capital in the afternoon.
West Central High School juniors Jacob Keever and Riley Peterson spent the day in Springfield as part of this Youth Day experience. They were sponsored by McDonough Telephone Cooperative. John Steck, WCHS junior, also had the opportunity to represent Henderson County at Youth Day in Springfield and was sponsored by Western Illinois Electrical Coop. John was also selected for the trip to Washington, DC this summer.
