Donuts With Dad 2019 - Iggy Peck

Iggy Peck would have been proud of all the towers that were built at West Central Elementary on Friday, November 1st during our Donuts with Dad event.  Iggy Peck is the main character of the book, Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty.  In the story, Iggy loves to build things, even as a toddler when he built a great tower out of dirty diapers and glue! At the end of the story, Iggy saves the day by using his terrific architect skills to build a bridge so everyone can get home.

After the kindergarten through second grade students and their guests enjoyed donuts and juice, they settled in to hear this wonderful book read aloud.  Next, they split up and went to classrooms. Here, students and guests used toilet paper/paper towel tubes, paper, and tape to create a tower. Then students measured how tall their tower was and tested its strength.  They put heavy textbooks on top of their tower to see how many it would hold before falling over.

For more building fun, families can complete a Family Home STEM activity to build a bridge together.  Participation awards will be given for those who join in, create a bridge, and return it to school to be displayed.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like more information about this activity.

Additional building activities can be found on-line by googling “Iggy Peck, Architect activities” or “STEM building activities.”
