2018 National Honor Society Induction

By Alexander, Jane

March 26, 2018

West Central High School National Honor Society Induction was held on Monday night, March 19th at 7:00pm. Three present members, Kenna Armstrong, Nicholas Brokaw, and Victoria Olson, were in attendance to welcome eight new inductees to the society.  Macy Benge, Payton Clark, Peyton Jack, Jacob Keever, Molly Parsons, Danielle Rhinehart, Jenna Robertson, and Courtney Torrance were inducted.

Mrs. Alicia Pence was the guest speaker.   Alicia, of Stronghurst, is a 2007 West Central graduate,  and a former NHS member. She went on to Monmouth College where she graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.  Alicia then co-founded Family Outreach Community Center (FOCC) that year. FOCC assists families in need and helps them rise above poverty and gain a sense of self-sufficiency and passion again.  Since its founding, FOCC has impacted more than 1600 Henderson County individuals. Alicia remains on the Board of Directors for FOCC, while in her free time, she enjoys spending time with her 6-year-old son, dirt-track racing, assisting her husband Travis at their auto body shop, and scrapbooking.  She also raises funds for various causes including Relay for Life and the Highway 34 Coalition.

Mrs. Pence brought a warm and caring presence to the evening, and her powerful message reminded students that together their efforts to “be the change you want to see in the world”, could actually, when done by all, start a “wildfire” of change as they spark a movement of positive acts.  Whether the act is a small act of helping someone who is down on his luck, or helping a person who has run out of gas, or helping a child who needs a safe place in an uncertain world, doing something for others makes a difference and can inspire change in others as well.  She also told the members that they should not be afraid of big challenges either.  She told of how she and a friend saw a need and started FOCC as an effort to meet the needs of people in our community, and that vision continues to help people today, while also providing a vehicle for others to serve and volunteer.  Mrs. Pence shared inspiration with those in attendance, and while doing so, truly provided an example of what goodness and giving can look like in action.

After the induction ceremony, Mrs. Markey congratulated the members and challenged them to continue doing good works and to be sure to be kind to others along the way.  She referenced the recent “walk up” activity that the high school had participated in as an example of how even small acts of kindness to others can make a difference. She told the students she was anxious to watch what they accomplish in the future.

Several teachers, Mr. Rees, and Mr. Kirby were present with family, friends, and others to congratulate the members on achieving excellence in scholarship, character, service, and leadership.  Kenna Armstrong provided music for those in attendance, and the Culinary Occupations class provided refreshments. Congratulations to the new inductees.
