Advice from Anthony ONeal on paying for College. ONeal is committed to helping young adults learn how to make smart decisions with their money, relationships, and education in order to live a well-balanced life.

  1. Find scholarships and grants. There are a ton of ways to find free money to put toward your degree, whether it's by filling out the FAFSA, using my online scholarship search tool, doing your own research, or asking each school you're interested in about the scholarships they offer. Cha‑ching.

  2. Understand the true costs of college and find a school you can afford. The real “dream school” is the one you can afford without debt. That might mean going to a public, in‑state school instead of a private university, or getting some credit hours out of the way at a community college before transferring.

  3. Work. Having a part‑time job (no more than 15–20 hours per week) will help you stack cash and build solid skills you'll need in the workforce after graduation. You might want to look into on‑campus jobs, work‑study programs, or being a teaching assistant or resident assistant.

  4. Budget. Don't forget to have a plan for that income so you know exactly where your money's going every month. Pro tip: The EveryDollar app can make your life way easier!

**Students should be making decisions about where they will go next fall now** You should be hearing from the college/universities financial aid offices soon, if you haven’t already. Once your student has decided on a college/university, make sure to check that school’s web page for school/department specific scholarships!**
